Naoshima is next destination.
Naoshima is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea that has become known for its modern art museums, architecture and sculptures. The Island is a 3 hour drive from Osaka, and to get there you have to go with the local ferry. The price for bringing your car and 4 people is about 3.000 yen (25 euros), but a lot of guests just go without car and then rent a (electric) bycicle upon arrival. The island is very small, and can easily be covered by bicycle in a day or two.
Much of Naoshima’s art was installed by the Benesse Corporation, which oversees art museums, installations and sculptures on Naoshima. The Benesse museums were designed by the well known Japanese architect Ando Tadao. So was the ChiChu Art Museum and we came for precisely those two. Around the island is also large art installations in open air locations from, amongst others, Yayoi Kusama (hence the dotted ferries).
